Blazing Star #1622

Casual Botanical Snapshot

Blazing Star

Botanical Identity: Blazing Star — Liatris spicata. This plant is notable for its tall spikes covered in feathery purple blooms.

Field Journal Entry: Today, I came across the striking vertical blooms of the Blazing Star. The way these purples stretch upwards seems to defy gravity. Seeing them grouped together almost creates a purple haze against the green stalks.

King James Verse: “The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.” – Isaiah 40:8

Fascinating Facts & Folklore: Blazing Star is often admired for its unique beauty and is a popular choice in gardens to attract butterflies and bees with its nectar-rich flowers.

Traditional Uses & Global Customs: Historically, Native American tribes used the roots of Blazing Star for medicinal purposes, treating sore throats and abdominal complaints. However, modern usage in this manner isn’t common.

Care & Safety Cautions: Preferring sunny locations, Blazing Star thrives in well-drained soils. It’s generally safe for gardens but can cause mild stomach upset if ingested by pets.

📍 Explorer Note: In today’s bumble I found the Blazing Star near East Meadow, NY.
